As is typical of this time of year, our business slows and so does business for most building material dealers in this part of the country. Prices have been dropping slightly for lumber and plywood, but mill closures hold prices higher than they otherwise would fall.
How does that work? By being closed for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year, mills can hold pressure on the market by compressing demand into a smaller window, thus keeping enough demand to not allow discounts on their products. Some mills don’t publish their holiday schedule until very late in the game, thus allowing themselves to tack on some extra days closed to increase market pressure and keep prices a little more steady.
For now plywood prices are slipping slightly. USG has announced price increases on all of their wall board products effective January 1st and it is likely that other manufacturers will follow suit.
Stay tuned for more information on pricing as we head into winter 2014 and take a look at some of the new products we are offering.
Happy Holidays from all of us at Home Central!
